In Defense of
the Irregular Garden

There once was a botanist, calm as can be,
Tending to a garden, but of children you see.
A learning support teacher with students galore,
The specialist called in when the teacher could handle no more.
For some students need more sunlight, some need more shade,
Some grow their best thinking when given more aid.
While some are like oaks, standing sturdy and tall,
Some bloom into vines that will beautifully sprawl.
In a world full of expectations to grow the best corn,
There are the botanists feeling forlorn,
She knows that true growth, sturdy, gentle, or vast,
Is nurtured by patience, not by moving too fast.
So she studies each leaf and each curious root,
Finding the perfect and fertile pursuit.
For the measure of harvest is not in the height,
But the courage it takes for each plant to seek light.
Some say that teaching is like being a gardener, nurturing each plant. This is a fine metaphor for a regular classroom teacher. But as a learning support specialist, I’m not the gardener. I’m the botanist who gets called in when a plant is considered ‘difficult,’ ‘wilting,’ or ‘not growing in the right direction.’
On a daily basis, I am working with the plants in my garden, supporting them to be successful. This means I spend less time with a watering can and more time as a negotiator. My tools are not just patience and repeated instructions, but data points, accommodation plans, and carefully worded emails. I am negotiating for the most precious currency in a child's life: time. More time on a test, more time to process a question, more time to just breathe. I am not lowering the bar; I am building a unique scaffold for each child so they can climb and feel success - against the only person who matters; themselves.
The educational blueprint often calls for an efficient, productive field—neat rows of corn all ripening at the same time. My primary role, however, is to point out that this student isn’t corn. They’re a magnolia tree. They need a different season. They need space to spread their roots. They will bear incredible flowers, but not by Tuesday. The flowers I work with are the ones that need an extra reminder to do their homework, to return a form, to remember where their next class is. They are the ones who haven't yet learned how to highlight key words, focus on the teacher when a game is on outside, or how to prioritise a list of tasks. They are the students you worry about when you’re not there, and the ones you think about long after the school day has ended.
Yet, I am fortunate. I do not do this work alone. I work alongside a dedicated team of botanists, arborists, landscapers and gardeners—learning specialists, EAL specialists, counsellors and teachers—all committed to proving the worth of every unique plant in our garden. We sometimes feel pressure to justify our work. A blank timetable slot can look concerning to those measuring corn production… right?
Wrong.
That blank space is where the real cultivation happens. It’s reserved for the one-on-one coaching, the creative strategy session, the careful nurturing that cannot be scheduled in a standardised grid. Our worth is not measured in the quantity of fertilizer spread, but in the patient, expert care we provide to ensure that each magnolia—each brilliant, non-corn student—gets exactly what they need to eventually bloom in their own spectacular way.
My learning? I’ve learned to champion the glory of the diverse garden. The system might sometimes overlook my patch, but that’s its loss. We work in the most beautiful, challenging garden you’ll ever see, and I wouldn't trade it for the most pristine field in the world.
